Knight joins ESPN as guest studio analyst

BRISTOL, Conn. -- College basketball fans flipping channels back when Bob Knight was coaching couldn't resist stopping when they spied one of his interviews or news conferences. Nobody wanted to miss what he might say or do.

ESPN executives figure nothing will change with the Hall of Famer switching careers. The network announced Thursday that Knight will appear as a guest studio analyst leading up to and during the NCAA tournament.

''The information, the entertainment, the sophistication, the knowledge he brings about basketball and issues surrounding basketball -- add that to how compelling an individual he is, and it made perfect sense for us to put him on our platforms,'' said Norby Williamson, executive vice president for production.

Even before Knight resigned from Texas Tech on Feb.

Republic of Adygea

At the Pushkin State Drama Theater, productions are staged in both official languages, i.e., Adygean and Russian. The Nalmes State Academic Adygean Folk Dance Ensemble and the Islamei State Adygean Folk Song Ensemble are examples of successful professional groups. New professional groups have also been formed, for example, the symphony orchestra of the Adygean Ministry of Culture, the Russkaya Udal State orchestra of Russian folk instruments, a choral ensemble, and the Oshten show ensemble, which popularizes the finest accomplishments of Russian popular culture. Great emphasis is also placed on reviving ancient customs and ceremonies. For example, the Leperyshu and Kesho Kuang, Adygean dances that were lost in the historic homeland but were preserved by the diaspora, have returned to Adygea.

Colombia's rebels: A fading force?

The Colombian government says that the country's largest rebel group, the Farc has gone into irreversible decline, hit by desertions and the killings of high-profile members.

Speaking to a Colombian newspaper earlier this week, Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos said the tough US-backed policy of President Alvaro Uribe was yielding results.

According to the government, the number of rebel fighters is down from 16,000 in 2001 to a current figure of 6,000-8,000.

"They are in a process of splitting; they have lost important leaders... They are facing a shortage of supplies, lack of communications, loss of command and control," Mr Santos said.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia has been fighting the Colombian state for five decades.

Intercepted communications

Three important Farc leaders were killed last year, and their deaths have shaken the Farc, resulting in a loss of morale, according to Mr Santos.

Watford accept King bid

WATFORD have accepted a £5m bid from Fulham for Marlon King.

Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson saw his £5m cash offer for the 11-goal striker accepted this afternoon and King will have a medical at Craven Cottage before signing a lucrative three-year deal. King is likely to make his debut against Arsenal, his boyhood club, on Saturday. Collins John, who rejected a move to Watford this time last season, will join on loan with a view to making the move permanent in the summer. For the full story, see tomorrow's Watford Observer. Scotland has to fight for a fair deal

After losing the benefits of the oil in the North Sea, Scotland could have a second chance in the eastern Atlantic. Until recently, this has been legally impossible; only the Continental Shelf could be developed. Now the UN has opened up new frontiers in deeper waters - provided the adjoining nations agree.

If Scotland were independent, we would be negotiating the division of 162,935 square miles of sea bed forming the Rockall/Hatton Basin, deemed to be oil-rich. But Scotland is not a negotiating party along with Ireland, Iceland and Denmark (acting for the Faroe Islands) who all have claims. Our seat is occupied by the British government in London. So what's the problem? Surely it will look after Scotland's interests?

But will it? The evidence is that the British government has a habit of ignoring the interests of the Scottish people if they clash with imperial priorities.

French Resolution

The Los Angeles Times leads with a local story but off-leads Plan B. USA Today leads with a story on states reducing property taxes as housing prices rise, but replacing the income with higher sales or income taxes.

The Post scooped everyone yesterday, but now it's official: Plan B should be available without a prescription by the end of the year to women 18 and older, after years of being held up by political disputes within the FDA. The reaction to yesterday's decision went pretty much as you'd expect. Supporters cheered but said they would work to get the age restriction removed; opponents, mainly social conservatives, promised to make the approval a political issue. Everyone notes that senators, including Hillary Clinton, who had had used the issue to hold up the confirmation of acting FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, said they would now allow it to go ahead.

BAYAN hesitant to sit down with PNP on rally

The Senate's latest star resource person Rodolfo “Jun" Lozada Jr. appealed to the public Saturday not to prejudge Dante Madriaga who voluntarily testified in the Upper Chamber's probe on the controversial national broadband network (NBN) deal last week. abs-cbnNEWS.com (3/1/2008 8:29:19 PM) .

Columns - Political Column

Another was to allow two Parliamentary Select Committees, one to probe allegations of state fund transfers to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the other to go into the procurement of MiG-27 fighter jets from Ukraine, to lapse.

They insist that the prorogation was to make way for President Rajapaksa to make a fresh policy statement of his Government immediately after the ceremonial opening. Originally, plans were afoot to prorogue days ahead of the Christmas holidays. However, the idea has been dropped in the light of a more important factor - the extension of the State of Emergency. That will take place during sittings that will resume on January 8 next year. Immediately thereafter is the prorogation though it will be of a short duration. In this backdrop, speculation is rife that a Cabinet re-shuffle is on the cards.

Jersey afraid to face a horror in its midst

IT HAS been a disturbing few weeks in Britain. As always, at about 1pm each weekday, posters for the London afternoon newspaper, the Evening Standard, appear on the streets, bearing the latest news in bold, black writing.

Dramatic epithets have dominated recently: the Bridgend Suicides; the Suffolk Strangler; the Bus-Stop Stalker; and this week, simpler but more creepy, Haut de la Garenne.

It is unclear what label this former Victorian orphanage on the Channel Island of Jersey will earn in time, given that "House of Horrors" is taken - forever associated with Fred and Rosemary West.

But Haut de la Garenne bears awful similarities to the West house. Stories have emerged of physical and sexual abuse of vulnerable youngsters, and the death of at least one child - perhaps at the hands of adults responsible for his or her care.

From the Editor :

Oh, hold on a minute, it was Bangladesh, and you almost lost to them last time you played, and managed to lose at home to the Windies. I take it back. And Rohindra, your dead right, hope I didn't sound like I was havin ga go (can't remember what I said). I was thinking one of these two might put Lara off. Neither deserve too, Lara is a possible for a best-of-all-time XI and scored 400* agianst a very very strong side, neither of which can be said about these two. If Tendulkar, Ponting or Sangakkara were smacking the Bangladeshis to all parts then I wouldn't mind them getting it, or in the unlikley even they were playing a side that has registered a win against a current test playing nation, I wouldn't mind. Still, if they do it it will make the point immensely clearly that the state of Bangladesh's test team is unnacceptable, they either need to be cut or something needs to be done to raise their standards NOW.

MSU basketball: 'Cats look to step it up on road

But that's life on the road. Your top-echelon teams figure out how to win those games."It isn't as if losing any or all of the next three would deal a crushing blow to MSU's season, though a success or two would go a long way toward the program's first winning record in four years. On the flip side, winning one or two would provide a meaningful stepping stone into a Big Sky schedule that won't serve up anything more challenging than the Bobcats' non-conference slate. Not that Huse has to spend any time driving the point home."I like challenging our guys and throwing them out there," he said. "They know what's happening. Us wanting to make some noise on the road here, I don't have to be real creative. These guys understand what balance has to be struck if they want to make some noise in the Big Sky Conference."In Nevada, the 'Cats will find a team that's a mere shadow of the squad that coasted to its fourth straight Western Athletic Conference title a year ago, has won at least 25 games in four straight seasons and owns a 108-31 record over the past four years. The Wolf Pack, who left the Big Sky in 1992, lost four starters from a year ago, including all-American forward Nick Fazekas.

LEED-ND: A new framework for sustainable development

The popularity of LEED certification, which ranks buildings based on criteria such as energy use and building materials, is on the rise.

Yet in a state like New Jersey, where the transportation sector accounts for more than one-third of carbon emissions, truly going green requires a more holistic approach than simply looking at buildings.

To that end, the U.S. Green Buildings Council has been piloting LEED-ND, a new rating system developed in concert with the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council. LEED-ND goes beyond individual buildings to look at sustainable practices on a neighborhood level.

Projects are judged on clear and specific criteria in four categories: Smart Location and Linkage; Neighborhood Pattern and Design; Green Construction and Technology; and Innovation and Design Process.

Commentary: Latino voters want a better idea of 'change'

It's like comparing a dolphin to a frozen mackerel.

Personal charisma is an important element of the American Hispanic experience. Obama's undeniable charisma, therefore, has helped to broaden his appeal, to young Latinos especially.

But Thursday night's debate had each candidate checking off the boxes on the standard list of minority entitlements while offering tired bromides aimed to strike a response chord with the victim-class. But just who are the victims?

Interview with John Byrne Cooke

Second, do you find any analogs to the current times, i.e. the run-up to the Iraq War, and in particular, say, CNN, the Washington Post editorial page and so forth… or does the analogy break down? (And where do the "alternative press"… the Phoenix, the Voice, etc…. blogs? … fit into this?)

John Byrne Cooke: Of course there were more moderate views than Hearst– Hearst was the extreme example! Then, Hearst had only two papers — the New York Journal and the San Francisco Examiner. New York papers had no comparable analogs in papers of comparable importance elsewhere — even in Washington. Hearst was out front — he was in a battle for circuulation with Pulitzer's New York World. Pulitzer was one step more cautious than Hearst. The New York Evening Post was much more cautious still.

Several of his staff have been with PTP from the onset. Each individual program at PTP is customized to the client's specific goals, the company said. All individuals work one-on-one with their trainer, building a relationship and sense of trust that the trainer is focused on their needs.

Customer Service: Is it Alive and Well in Community Banking?

A calendar of Lion's Club activities, school events, senior center notices and information on the Yachats Community Health Clinic were posted; all visible signs of community engagement. The lobby area is traditional of most banks - a large service desk for the tellers or "customer assistance agents," wood-paneled walls, high ceilings and open lobby area. Several customer service desks are also in the immediate lobby area for ease in loan applications, new accounts, and other client needs.Bo Smith, the branch manager, keeps his desk on the lobby floor. "I like to know what's going on," he said with a smile. "That's hard to do if you're behind a door somewhere."Smith knows a lot about community service. Promoted to the branch manager position in the fall of 2007, he has prioritized the branch's relationship with the community by encouraging a philosophy of "giving back." The Yachats Bank of the West is a regular participant in philanthropic and neighborhood service activities."We are committed to being a small town community bank," Smith said of Bank of the West's decision to locate in Yachats.

Skeletons lurk in ANCYL leadership fight

Polokwane is all but forgotten. Mangaung in the Free State is where blood will be drawn in just a few weeks when the ANC Youth League holds its conference there to elect a new leader. At 37, Fikile Mbalula - as much a nemesis of gruff white liberals as of Mbeki supporters - must step down. Amid indiscriminate panic in some media, three charismatic candidates have emerged for the unquestionably powerful position of president. Two bring considerable controversy with them. Yet even this is perversely in keeping with what the league is threatened with losing: its reputation as an organisation of like-minded and politically fastidious young revolutionaries. ANCYL national executive committee member Songezo Mjongile's name evokes sensationalism, reminders of a rich hinterland of naked girls cavorting by the poolside, extravagant parties, mansions and other rumoured perks of the vast political capital allegedly engendered by murdered magnate Brett Kebble.

Maguire: Search was 'not handled properly'

BENNINGTON — A local school board member said Monday that the two-month search for a new superintendent was not handled properly.

On Thursday, the search consultant hired by the district defended recent decisions made by the search committee and district board, including the decision to hire an interim and suspend the search until October.

Board member Peter Maguire, of the Mount Anthony Union District, said he had a problem with the process, not the candidate, that appointed Assistant Superintendent George Carpenter interim superintendent after the initial search in December and January produced no finalists. He said he and many other supervisory union board members were not aware of the situation until a decision had already been made.

"It wasn't on the agenda so nobody could go to the meeting and put in their input," he said at a meeting on Monday.

In Africa, Bush Makes Case for US Aid

It has approved $5.5 billion in compacts with 16 countries, nine in Africa.

Programs such as these have kept the United States relatively popular in Africa, unlike throughout the rest of the world. Yet even ordinary people here consistently express surprise, as have Africa experts at home, at Bush's largesse. Bush was asked by a Beninese reporter whether his visit was "a stunt."

Thousands of people lined Bush's motorcade route the entire way in from the airport in Dar es Salaam. He was greeted by dancers in tan shirts bearing his likeness and waving American flags.

Bush wants $30 billion over the next five years for his AIDS program. Democrats complain that is too little and there is debate about its emphasis on abstinence and requirement of anti-prostitution pledges.
